Richard Smyth (he/him/his) earned his Ph.D. in English from the University of Florida. As a student of Gregory Ulmer in the early 1990s, his dissertation focused on developing a rhetoric of hypertext composition, in part derived from his experimental work in composing Genetis: A Rhizography, which was published by The Eastgate Quarterly Review of Hypertext and is part of Rebooting Electronic Literature: Documenting Pre-Web Born Digital Media Volume 4. He taught Writing for Interactive Media as an adjunct in the Visual & Media Arts department of Emerson College’s MFA program, and he has also taught at the undergraduate, high school and middle school levels, the latter as a Computer Science instructor. Smyth is also a published poet and editor/publisher of the environmental poetry journal Albatross.
