Universal Sim-Ejector Tool, 21st Century

No longer than a child’s little finger, its elaborate curves and mercurial shine ooze futurism. A technical, nano-marvel? Some expensive titanium jewelry? Neither. This silver feather offers one, simple function. For all its design, it exists merely to expel a half-inch square from a machine far more complex than itself. A key, with only a seasonal usage. A tool society wishes it could be without, yet for their phones to exist they keep this fickle shining stick somewhere they will never recall. Perhaps, one day, the billions of these silver keys, forgotten when the sim card is gone, will find another service for humanity. Decoration, a retro-tech earring, an incisor for a potter. But until then, it will be shut away in drawers and cupboards, behind sofas, under skirting boards, no light for it to shine with, waiting for when its owner might decide, on a whim, to travel to another country, or, finally, tired of their service provider, make a change.
